Do you have broken capillaries on your cheeks or nose? You may have a hereditary skin condition called “Rosacea.” This condition causes you to have persistent redness of the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Although this is more common in Caucasian patients, it has been noted to occur in Asian patients in some cases. Sometimes drinking alcohol worsens the redness for patients with Rosacea. However, only 76% of Rosacea patients complain that alcohol exacerbates the redness and most stated that the effect is immediate, whereas 14% will have the redness occur 24 hours later. Red wine seems to be the worst culprit.

The Cutera laser is the best way to minimize the redness that is caused by Rosacea. The redness presents as repetitive flushing or actual dilated vessels on the surface of the skin. Both men and women can get this problem. The Cutera Limelight IPL system works very effectively in controlling multiple small vessels and flushing, whereas the Cutera Excel laser can remove individual larger vessels on the skin’s surface. Combination treatment of these laser technologies is usually needed to improve the redness as much as possible. For darker skinned Rosacea patients, a technique of the Cutera Laser Genesis is effectively used to seal off the blood vessels in the dermis of the skin. There is no down time with Laser Genesis at all.

Rosacea patients can slowly develop pimples and thickened skin, especially around the nose with men. Topical prescription medical therapy is often needed at this stage. When men get very thick nose, such as WC Fields, it is called Rhinophyma. In order to reduce the size of the nose, a surgical procedure is needed to thin out the bulbousity of the nose using a combination of a hot knife and laser.
